Make-Up Days for Past Inclement Weather Events

Dear Parents and Pettus ISD Staff,

The winter season is upon us.  Our district staff understands that our decisions to open or close schools in inclement weather has a big effect on families.  We also understand that our students are better served both academically and socially by being in school.

First, let me say a few things about our decision-making process when declaring bad weather days or calling delays or early dismissals.  My first priority is always student and staff safety.  As secondary factors, I consider the importance of having children in school to learn and grow.  I also recognize that many of our parents work, and it is an inconvenience and loss of income to take an unforeseen day off to stay home with students.

Second, is the scheduling of make-up days.  We are required by state law to have 75,600 minutes of instructional time per year.  Therefore, days missed due to bad weather will be made up as follows:

Day Missed                                                    Make-Up Day

Friday, December 8, 2017 (2-hour delay)                       Monday, January 29, 2018 Half Day (8:00 A.M.- 12:00 P.M.)

Tuesday, January 16, 2018 (full day)                              Monday, January 22, 2018 Full Day

Wednesday, January 17, 2018 (2-hour delay)                 Monday, January 29, 2018 Half Day (8:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M.)

I hope that this explanation helps everyone understand the process that our district staff uses to make the best possible decision for all in our district.  As always, please feel free to contact my office at (361)375-2296 ext. 124 if you have any questions.
